What are Superfruits?
Superfruits – a nutrient-rich fruit considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being.
Exceptionally rich in minerals, vitamins, fibre and antioxidants, Superfruits include blueberries, blackberries, acerola, the Goji Berry and more. Eating these Superfruits to improve cardiovascular health, reduce disease risks by boosting immunity and eliminating free radicals are just scratching the surface of how beneficial they are for our health. Harnessing the healing properties of these Superfruits to boost our skin’s immunity is the next step to smooth, radiant skin.
Goji Berries have long been known for their healing and medicinal purposes and dates back 2,000 years - many Asian cultures have used the fruit in medicine. Imbued with beta-carotene and zeaxanthin – two powerful antioxidants, Goji Berries are superior warriors against free radicals and external pollution. In addition, it contains 18 Amino Acids – 8 of which are essential for bodily functions, a multitude of vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and antioxidants – making it the new age Superfruit.
One study in mice found drinking 5% goji juice gave them enough antioxidants to protect against UV light damage and skin disorders. Yet another study compared the results of participants who consumed goji berry juice daily for 2 weeks to those who didn’t. Participants who consumed the juice reported an increase in (1) energy, (2) quality of sleep, (3) ability to focus, (4) calmness and overall well being, and (5) athletic performance.
Using SuperFruits in Skin Care Products
So… How does my moisturiser benefit from having Superfruits in it?
Antioxidants boost our immune system and fight harmful radicals and inflammation. Exposure to the sun, environmental pollution, stress, sweat and other biological factors cause constant stress to our skin – leading to the formation of free radicals and cause premature ageing. These Superfruits are therefore vital in protecting our skin health from the inside out so that our skin remains hydrated, radiant and smooth.
The seemingly endless sources of vitamins contained also help to boost our skin’s immunity and protect it from external stress. The Goji Berry is one prime example: containing vitamins B1, B2, B6, C and E, it is able to energize the skin. With the rich minerals, vitamins and antioxidants, these Superfruits improve the skin in numerous ways:
1. Intensely moisturize the skin by forming a protecting film on the skin
While moisturizing the skin might not seem ideal in hot-climate Singapore, it is extremely important to keep your skin cells hydrated. Just as we need to drink 8 cups of water a day, hydrating your skin (with the right product, of course!) is essential to reducing excessive production of sebum and thus reduce oily skin. The protective film on your skin also combats the external stress we experience on a daily basis so that premature ageing is reduced.
2. Fight against UV rays and sun damage
While we all need that vitamin D from the sun, excessive exposure to UV rays can cause free radicals to form and lead to dull, tired skin and premature ageing. Beta-carotene - an essential plant phytochemical, is often used in skin care products to improve skin health, reduce skin irritation, manage the effects of the sun and reduce the impact of aging. These properties restore biological balance to the skin.
