Finding the Best Skin Care Routine For Men

It is just as important for men to take care of their skin as women in 2023. With constant exposure to pollution, UV rays, dust and more harmful substances for your skin, it is now key for men to learn and understand about their skin and how they can best care for the largest organ in their bodies.

Healthy skin goes beyond radiant, smooth skin - it is important to keep it hydrated and nourished with the right ingredients your skin type needs to avoid acne, sensitivity, dryness and for men, ingrown hair from shaving.

The key difference between men and women's skin is the thickness, and the effect of constant shaving on men's skin. First and foremost, though, it is first important to identify and understand one's own skin type:

  • Sensitive skin: may appear dry and flaky with increased sensitivity to the sun or product usage; can also appear red

  • Normal skin: clear skin with minimal feelings of tightness or shine

  • Dry skin: constant tight sensation and appears flaky and rough

  • Oily skin: looks shiny and greasy and is prone to acne, blackheads and inflammation

  • Combination skin: commonly tight and dry in the cheek and shiny in the T-Zone (forehead, nose and chin)

Understanding your skin type will help you learn how to take care of your skin and select skin care products that are right for you. It is also essential to be mindful of these skin care tips:

  1. Keep your skin clean by washing it at least twice daily with a suitable cleanser. This is especially important 1) when you first wake up, 2) after a long day, 3) after exercise and 4) after a prolonged period of sweating. This will ensure your skin is kept clean and free of bacteria to prevent clogged pores and acne, especially if you have oily skin.
  2. Shave with care. Regardless of your shaver of choice, it is important to shave carefully in one direction to avoid in-grown hairs and razor burns.
  3. Moisturise your skin daily. Different moisturisers have different purposes - those for oily skin reduce sebum production and keeps the skin free of shine; dry skin moisturisers hydrate and nourish the skin with essential active ingredients to keep the skin cells moist and happy. It is important to moisturise your skin daily to keep skin happy and healthy while minimising the appearance of fine lines make your skin look brighter and younger.
  4. Consider product labels and ingredients. The skin care products you choose will depend on your skin type. If you have acne-prone skin, look for cleansers and moisturizers that say “oil free” or “non-comedogenic,” as these won’t clog your pores. If you have sensitive skin, use mild, “fragrance free” products, as products containing fragrances can leave skin feeling irritated and dry. However, beware of products labeled “unscented,” as many of these contain masking fragrances that can still irritate your skin.
  5. Wear sunscreen whenever outdoors. To help prevent sun damage that can lead to wrinkles, age spots and even skin cancer, before going outdoors, apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of skin, including your scalp, ears, neck and lips. For best protection, use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. You can also protect your skin by seeking shade and wearing sun-protective clothing, such as a lightweight and long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection, when possible. For more effective sun protection, select clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) label.

Basic Men’s Skincare Routine

Step 1: Cleanse your skin at least twice a day with the 60 Refreshing Cleansing Gel that removes impurities and dirt accumulated on the skin throughout the daily while moisturising it - ensuring that your skin is cleaned thoroughly without drying it out. It also contains Vitamins A and E for anti-ageing antioxidative action to guard against oxidative stress.

Step 2: Use the 2 Cream Soft Mask daily in the morning for 2 to 3 minutes for clearer, brighter skin. A must for all skin types, this clay mask absorbs all the impurities released by your skin during the night and tightens the pore for smoother, silky skin.

Step 3: Apply a day cream to start your skin's day right by protecting it against external aggressors such as pollution and dust. The 361 Lumin’Eclat Insta-Glow Day Cream awakens your skin, maintains its youthfulness and gives it a pearly, radiant glow in one simple step!

Step 4, AM: Use the 391 Multi-Protection Sunblock daily to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays that causes premature ageing and pigmentation on the skin. This sunblock is light and doesn't feel greasy, making it the ultimate protection against sun-induced ageing.

Step 4, PM: We know it can be a hassle to go through all the steps at night but it is vital as your skin repairs the skin as you sleep. Start by cleansing your skin and follow with a serum and moisturiser suited for your skin to strengthen your skin against environmental stressors and keep it healthy and radiant.

If you have oily skin, we recommend the 301 Perfecting Pore Refiner Serum to effectively reduce sebum production and shine to reduce clogged pores without harshly drying out your skin, followed by the 300 Velvet Skin Mattifying Cream to reduce acne while keeping the skin hydrated. It also smooths the skin and gives is a silky soft appearance with reduced  redness.

If you have dry skin, the 240 Hydra'Global Serum is essential for restoring water to the skin cells while gradually diffusing it to the heart of the skin. Your skin is hydrated instantly and continuously right around the clock, giving it increased energy so that it looks bright and plump. Follow this with the 262 Hydra Global Light Cream to stimulate the skin’s natural production of hyaluronic acid and elastin. It hydrates intensively, firms and smooth the skin.

These four steps are the tip of the iceberg but is key to keeping your skin feeling healthy and radiant. As you work on your skin's health, you may want to look into eye cream that prevent lines around the eyes, weekly face scrubs and masks to exfoliate and nourish the skin and more. What's most important, however, is to develop and maintain a daily skincare habit.
